
Two external signals move pizza demand more reliably than anything a marketer can invent: the weather and the local team’s fixture list. Both are known in advance, both are free, and both are ignored by most independent operators because nobody has set up the trigger.
Weather affects delivery and carryout in opposite directions, and the effect is non-linear: it appears at thresholds rather than gradually.

The most important weather rule is a negative one. In genuine severe weather, demand exceeds capacity without any help from marketing, delivery times blow out, and drivers are at risk. Promoting into that produces bad orders, bad reviews and, occasionally, bad accidents.
Build the severe-weather trigger to suppress promotional sends and substitute an operational message about realistic timing. This is one of the few automations that earns its keep by not sending.

Fixture lists are published months ahead. Build the entire season into the marketing calendar in one sitting, then let it run. The pattern that works has three touches per major fixture.
Weather and game day both concentrate demand. A promotion that lands on top of a natural spike can push a store past its capacity, and the marketing then converts into long waits, refunds and one-star reviews.
Gate both triggers on a store-level capacity check: forecast demand against staffed capacity, and if the store is already projected above threshold, suppress the promotional element and send the operational one instead. Multi-unit operators should evaluate this per store, since one store can be swamped while another two miles away is quiet.
Any reliable forecast API keyed to each store's coordinates. What matters is that the trigger uses the forecast for the store's own location and the relevant time window, not a regional daily summary. A regional average will miss the local afternoon downpour that actually drives the evening.
Less reliably. Where there is no strong local allegiance, national fixtures still produce a lift but a much flatter one, and the creative should lean on the occasion, people gathering, rather than on the team.
